Room 7's TLC Experience on PhotoPeach
Last Thursday Room 7 had an exciting visit to the Tread Lightly Caravan. We participated in a variety of activities designed to help us appreciate how what we do everyday impacts on the Earth and what we can do to lessen that impact. The message was that if everyone just made one small change, the overall impact of these changes would be significant.
Our thanks to the TLC team and to Aiden's dad, Kevin, for the photos.

Room 7 has entered into the spirit of our 'Fighting Cancer' fundraising week in style. Check out our amazing hats and head wear! Our class raised $42 dollars today. Mrs Milne refused to judge which hat was the best as there were so many outstanding hats so everyone voted for their favourite 3 hats. Tosh and his Lego creation received the most votes :)

Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival
Today is the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival so Johnny brought in some moon cakes for Room 7. They call these cakes 'Moon Cakes' because they look like a full moon. The other name for these cakes is 'Family Cakes' because families get together at this time and celebrate together. On the traditional Chinese calendar every 15th of the month the moon is full.
Thanks Johnny for sharing this with us :)

Room 7 learn about the largest organ in our body... the liver.
Yesterday at the Life Education caravan, Corrinne shared lots of amazing facts about the liver. Here are a few of them:
1. The liver has over 500 jobs so it is an extremely busy organ.
2. If someone's liver gets sick, another person can donate half of their liver to be transplanted into the sick person. Both parts of the liver will grow back to their original size - wow!
3. The liver is approximately the same size as a small melon.
4. The liver doesn't complain about being overworked until it gets seriously sick which means that you won't be able to find out early that there is a problem with your liver to stop it getting worse.
5. One of jobs of the liver is to break down fats before they are stored in the body and to sort the vitamins and minerals that are in the blood. These come from the food we eat.
LOOK AFTER YOUR LIVER!

Maths Wizard visiting R7.
Our brains were working over time in Room 7MM this morning.
It took Taewon less then 2 seconds to work out this problem:
(995+45)x2
Watch out Maths Wizard! He's after your job!
3 other children won prizes along with Chauntay who won the prize for having the closest guess for the number of books in our school library :) The correct total was 6,699.

Room 7, you are out of this world :)
I am very proud of the way you presented our assembly item yesterday.

Paragraph writing
Room 7 has been busy learning how to write well organised paragraphs. The secret is to look at all the key words and ideas that you have listed down under headings. Then you number them to show what order the ideas should be written in. Next you write a sentence for each number (although Jennifer did point out that sometimes an idea needs more than one sentence to explain it fully).

Update and new learning about temperature and thermometers
Yesterday, Sylvia asked the question, "What makes mercury so reactive to temperature?"
Mrs Milne asked some of the brainy people she lives with. She learnt:
1. Our thermometers don't contain mercury as it is considered too dangerous for school use. Our thermometers were filled will a type of alcohol with red dye added to it.
2. Science lesson. When liquids get heated, the particles move around so take up more space. When the particles are cooled down, they huddle together and take up less space so the alcohol goes down in the thermometer.

Room 7's Temperature work
Today in Room 7 we got to measure the temperatures of 5 different liquids. We had: nearly boiling water, hot water from the tap, cold water from the tap, milk from the fridge and icy water.
First we checked the scale used on the thermometer. Then we had to estimate what temperature we thought the 5 liquids would be. Next we used a thermometer to measure the temperatures.
So what did we find out?
1. The icy water was -1ºC.
2. The milk was 10.9ºC.
3. The cold water from the tap was 18ºC.
4. The hot water from the tap was 27ºC.
5. The near boiling water was 60ºC.
Then we made comparisons.
Just for fun we went to the staff room and put a thermometer in boiling water. We were amazed at how quickly the mercury shot up the thermometer! Then we plunged it into icy water and the mercury dropped down rapidly.
Who said, "Maths isn't fun!"?

Investigating Temperature
Temperature is one of our maths topics at the moment. We've learnt that
some temperatures can go below 0ºC. We have talked about scales. In
this photo we are practising reading different temperatures on
photocopied thermometers so that when we get to use real thermometers
tomorrow, we will know how to read them. Check out our post tomorrow to
see how we get on with the real equipment!
